In Touck, Minnesota, Aaron uses routine to steady his emotions. His regular visits to Ichabod’s Diner offer familiarity and time with Chloe Svenson, a friend he wishes could become something more.
But the diner’s new cook, John Smith, unsettles him. Aaron initially blames his discomfort on missing Jerry, the previous cook. Then he glimpses John leaning toward Chloe’s hair behind her back. When John’s unwanted attention becomes physical, Aaron intervenes. The confrontation upsets Chloe, who wanted to speak for herself. Embarrassed, Aaron retreats through the rear exit.
Chloe follows him into the parking lot. As Aaron apologizes, she sees John approaching behind him with a revolver. Before she can warn Aaron, John shoots him.
John gloats over Aaron’s body, then advances toward Chloe. Behind him, Aaron begins rising awkwardly. John fires again, but Aaron continues healing. A mysterious symbol radiates energy from his sternum, enveloping him. A flash reveals Blood: a crimson figure with an ivory faceplate and yellow eyes.
John’s remaining bullets pass through him. Blood attacks with impossible speed, lifts John by the throat, and throws him across the lot. He retrieves John and demands that he apologize to Chloe. John refuses. Blood kills him.
Chloe watches in horror as Aaron realizes what he has done. Desperate to escape, he wishes he could fly—and rises uncontrollably into the sky. He drifts over Minnesota until dusk finds him above Minneapolis. Bewildered by his apparent ability to fulfill his wishes, he wishes he were heavier. Blood plunges toward the city. Issue 1 closes on a red streak and a thunderous sound, leaving the outcome unresolved.
William’s story begins earlier that same day. Watching the sky near his rural home, he witnesses a fiery object fall and recovers its strange alloy. He fashions it into Renaissance festival armor, unaware it contains advanced alien nanotechnology. When danger strikes, the armor transforms around him, becoming Iron.
While William experiences his first adventure, Blood reaches his home and collapses, reverting to Aaron. Reunited, the friends discover that their transformations share a mysterious symbol. Their search for its meaning leads toward the Stranger, whose ancient technology connects their origins—and an awakening affecting millions.
